TB HIV Care Community Health Worker (Counsellor) - Southern

TB HIV Care (THC), in existence since 1929, is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation. We provide health care services throughout South Africa to both the general population and communities at increased risk for HIV and TB, including adolescent girls and young women, sex workers, inmates in correctional centres and people who use drugs. Purpose of the position:


Conducts community, household and individual health assessments and identify individual health needs and risks (actual and potential). Facilitate the family or an individual to seek the appropriate health service and promote the health of the households and the individuals within these households. Refer individuals for further assessment and testing after performing simple basic screening. Provides limited, simple health interventions in a household. Provide psychosocial support and manage interventions such as treatment interrupted tracing and adherence support.

Minimum Requirements


  • Grade 12 certificate

  • 5 Day Basic HIV information course, 13 Day Intensive Counselling course and 10 Day Adherence,

  • Finger Prick certificate

  • Must be resident in the area and have good knowledge of the geographical area

  • Fluent in Afrikaans and/or English

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provide education on HIV/TB/STI prevention, risk reduction planning, correct condom use and living positively

  • Perform wound care using appropriate material

  • Data collection

  • Promote Intensive HIV counselling and Adherence support to clients within their care

  • Facilitate chronic clubs for wellness and ART and the duties included

  • Supports long term retention in care strategy for stable patients as the Club Facilitator role in the Adherence Club team

  • Appropriate referral of all new cases- HIV, TB and STI
